A Study of Mandibular Third Molars

Abstract
The mandibular third molar is the most commonly impacted tooth in the oral cavity. Because of the dangers associated with mandibular third molar to environmental tissues, prophylactic extraction of third molar at high risk has been recommended.
We studied 116 patients (210 teeth) by clinical and radiographic measurement of mandibular third molar height, width and inclination.
The results were as follows;
1) Mandibular third molar -was frequently seen in third decade and more frequently in male than female.
2) In distribution of right and left site, there was no significant difference.
3) In third molar inclination, vertical inclination was 33.33%; horizontal inclination, 29.05%; mesial
inclination, 27.62%; distal inclination, 3.81%; lingual inclination, 3.33%; buccal inclination, 2.86%.
4) In the height, Pell and Gregory class A was 46.67%; class B, 35.24%; class C, 18.10%; and in the
width, Pell and Gregory class 2 was 48.57%; class 1, 34.76%; class 3, 16.67%.
5) In relation to inclination and height, vertical eruption at occlusal plane of the second molar was
most frequently seen at 24.29%.
6) In relation to inclination and width, vertically erupted third molar which had sufficient anteroposterior room (anterior to anterior border of ramus) to erupt was most frequently seen at 20.95%.
